So, How Do Jump Gates Work, Anyways?

#

Jump gates work in pairs. A ship stops at a jump gate and then enters in the co-ordinates to the nearest jump gate in the direction they wish to go. The jump gate computer verifies the co-ordinates and the size of the ship wishing to jump, then opens an entrance to the artifical wormhole between it and the chosen destination gate. The entrance may delay in opening if the gate on the other end indicates it is in use. This is determined by the first jump gate opening a tiny micro-portal only large enough to send a signal through. A query signal is sent to the requested gate and it advises when it is available, loacking the artificial wormhole to the requesting gate in place. Once it signals that it is availble, the requesting jump gate opens the jump portal and the ship passes through.
